Shankaracharya Hill

A 9th-century Shiva temple, 240 steps up from the parking. No phones inside. The valley view from the parapet is the best in the city.

Polo View Market

For pashmina, this is the only market we recommend. The shops near Clock Tower sell blends, not the real thing. For saffron and dry fruit, stop at a registered cooperative in Pampore on the way back.

Day 3: Gulmarg Day Trip

Two-hour drive, 56 km, climbing to 2,650 metres. Pack layers even in June.

Gulmarg Gondola

The world's second-highest cable car. Two phases:

Phase 1 to Kongdoori

3,050 metres. Around Rs 800. Open year-round if winds permit.

Phase 2 to Apharwat Peak

3,980 metres. Around Rs 1,000. Closes often on snow days. Book online a day in advance during peak season.

Summer vs Winter

June to September: horseback meadow rides, the world's highest 18-hole golf course, day hikes to Khilanmarg. December to mid-March: world-class off-piste skiing.

Day 4: Pahalgam

90 km from Srinagar, 2.5 hours. The road crosses Pampore's saffron fields.

Betaab Valley

Named after the 1983 film. Entry Rs 50. Visit before 11 am to beat the buses.

Aru and Baisaran

Aru is 12 km up the Lidder, far quieter than Betaab. Baisaran (Mini Switzerland) is a 5 km horseback ride at Rs 1,500 to 2,000. Trek up in 90 minutes if you prefer.

Lidder River Rafting

Class II to III, April through September. A 4 km run is Rs 800 per person, 45 minutes.

Day 5: Sonamarg or Srinagar

Sonamarg, 80 km from Srinagar, opens from May to October. The Thajiwas Glacier is a 3 km pony ride from the meadow. In May, the ice walls are still standing, and the photographs come out well.

To skip the long drive, stay in Srinagar. The Sunday Floating Market on Dal Lake starts at 5:30 am. Set the alarm.

Day 6: Departure

Most flights to Delhi leave 8 am and 11 am. SXR security runs multiple checkpoints; reach 2.5 hours early. A sunrise Shikara is a better last memory than airport coffee.
